In the hills and valleys there are some sights to be had. Below are few walks which we ambled around…
Walk 1 – Mount Kigali
Mount Kigali looms over us all so why not loom over it! We walked in a big circle and had the seemingly obligatory handshake with military that anytime you go exploring!
Walk 2 – Loopy Nyabarongo
This was great little dodge and weave around the great Nyabarongo river. Watch out for the hippos!
Walk 3 – Unhappy Valley
I spotted this great wooded untouched valley on google earth. Therefore it is with excitement that Joey and I set off. When we reached the end of the road, Joey and I nodded to the army guard and walked into the wilderness. We immediately hit an odd village made out of black corrugated iron and occupied by gentlemen wearing black. Thinking this was all a bit strange, Joey and I marched on. Ten minutes passed. Suddenly one of the chaps from the village caught up with us and asked if we had “permission”. Having seen no signs of restricted access and seemingly causing no alarm to the army guard or the odd village inhabitants, a vigorous debate ensued. Eventually the chap mentioned “army” or “military” enough times that Joey and I thought it wise that we should return see what all the fuss was about. Just as we made back to the entrance to the village three R D F vehicles arrived. Joey and I had a chat the head of the R D F convoy; primarily about the premier league. The chat ended with a gesture from the R D F guy implying that we should consider leaving. Joey and I considered this suggestion and left.
Walk 4 – Airport Constitutional
A great ramble around one of the closest green valleys to the centre of Kigali.
Walk 5 – Colline Jari Jaunt
A great walk through forest throughout and so near to Kigali.
Walk 6 – Military Mingle
A great walk jumping from forest to forest. In one place marked by the exclamation mark in the map below the path wains, just carry on and hold your elevation.
Walk 7 – Suspended Walk
A walk that starts with a suspension bridge!! Then a little climb, a wander through a forest and then back over the suspension bridge!
Walk 8 – Dippy Walk
Down into the valley. Up the other side. Across the top of the hill. Back down into the valley. Back up the other side. Across the top of the hill. After 16km you have had a good walk.
Walk 9 – Bumbogo Mining Valley
A good walk around this valley pot marked with artisanal rock mines.
Walk 10 – Nyagasambu Valley
A scramble around the Nyagasambu valley with options…
Walk 10 – Mines a Steep Hike
We had the Nyiragongo the following weekend so we blasted this pleasant hike… until you arrive at the climb!
Walk 11 – Kizabonwa Prayer Mountain Walk
A great up and down across the Kizabonwa prayer mountain. Watch out for the worshippers!

Walk 12 – Steamy Peninsula Walk
A great walk around this peninsula where for a short time you leave the world behind with the option of a unwelcoming dip in a hot spring…
